I am trying to find out what career choice would lead me to research autism and find methods to help people with autism.

Since Autism is a Neurological disorder, you may consider Neurology. You can always focus your field after you graduate.

I think you should search for Jenny McCarthys web site since she is an expert on this now.. and would have a lot of info
Otherwise, mental health research in the medical protocol is biological , chemistry research and there are various areas available.. all of which you would need a PHD in biochemistry, an MD, etc to do the actual research… start finding out the info you need to make a good career choice…. just start asking the right people, places… talk to a school counselor
