I’m developing a training program for parents of students with autism who are school-aged. Any input would help! This program will be given through a school district, and the main purpose is to give parents information so they can perform appropriate follow-up intervention at home. What kind of topics should be covered?
Toughest question and its always asked by someone, "What causes Autism?" and "Is there a cure?". Be honest and through because saying that we just don’t know doesn’t work. Discuss what is going to change for the family as a whole. Mention the many resources that are available. Talk about current interventions, dispel the many myths surrounding autism and mental health. Always emphasize that no one is at fault, especially parents and that there is so much potential in these children. People like Temple Grandon have proven that.
Why me? What did I do wrong? What do I do first? Can I keep him at home?
What resources do I have? Is this a life sentence for my child? How do I make sure my child has the best of everything? Where do I find people in the same situation?
Are there treatments and medications. How do I mitigate the impact on my other children? Who do I call when I can’t take anymore? What does this mean for my marriage? Is is safe to have more children?
Then you enter the second ten seconds of you life after diagnosis.
