I am asking because I just read an article which said Autism affects 1 percent of US children. Also, it says it afflicts boys more often than girls and whites more often than other blacks.

Autism rates are not as well documented in most other countries. Sometimes this is mostly due to poverty. The poor people with Autism are often overlooked especially if they never go to school. Also other countries may have a different definition of Autism. However there is little evidence that Autism rates should be much different in other countries. There are some girls who don’t get diagnosed with Autism, because the DSM-IV and other diagnostic tools are gender biased. Autism can present differently in girls, but the DSM-IV is based on boy behavior.
